Review of the Week: Empty Shop

In a nutshell: Non-profit organisation that offers space in which to put on and view culture: exhibitions, poetry readings, film nights, performances of all kind. It has a bar, but ‘is not a bar’.

Opening hours: Depend on events, but also open Wednesday – Saturday, 8pm to 12 as a cultural hangout venue.

Prices: Entry on regular nights is free, events are usually around £2–£6. Hire prices are £25 for a half day and £50 for a whole day. £3–£4 for a pint of craft beer.

Best features: Soothing relief from the vapid Durham nightlife scene. Currently charmingly half-painted and dusty. Friendly owners and frequenters. Reliable website.

Worst feature: Doesn’t open enough.
