Waiting

“‘Tick tock, tick tock,’ love seems to mock…”

Waiting

Yesterday’s time sits on the clock;
It’s almost love. It’s half past pain.
‘Tick tock, tick tock,’ love seems to mock,
Against my will, it still remains;
That slog of hopeful, sunlit days,
We sit together in my mind,
Mere fiction, just a mental play,
For what I feel, you don’t in kind.
It’s unrequited love, I know,
I should move on, I should just leave,
Move on with life, and let time flow;
Forget this love, forget to grieve.
But when I ask: ‘Then shall I go?
Escape from this, be free again?’
The head shouts ‘yes’, the heart shouts ‘no’,
The struggle never seems to end.
Eventually, I may not stay,
I’ll know that time is getting late,
You’ll be the one that got away,
But not today: today, I’ll wait.
