Too briefly now, the sun slips by
as men prepare for Christmas time,
readying lights and hot mulled wine
under a clear and starlit sky.
At least, they do, when time allows
(and stars are not concealed by clouds),
but times are scarce in life’s design
when fervent needs and hopes align.
Some free advice to those inclined,
less to rage than to unwind:
Avoid a Christmas Eve shopping spree
for gifts to place beneath your tree.
And fight against the cynic’s sneer
when words and deeds are saccharine
as might, in other days, wear thin –
then maybe this, and every year,
you’ll find your share of festive cheer.
