“…But a better term I’ve not yet heard.”

Agape

When trying to write a poem for Valentine’s Day,
I found myself skirting the issue at hand.
What few turbulent feelings I’ve had in life,
Love is not one I can understand.
I’ve felt many things, and deep affection is one,
But is this love? How can one say?
True, you are on my mind occasionally
As I grind through my day.
But is that love? An assent to existence, a notion of desire?
Surely that’s too strong of a word.
I balk at the childish ‘like’, equally ‘crush’,
But a better term I’ve not yet heard.
What are you to me, and what I to you?
Give me some message or sign!
Should I spill all that I now fail to describe,
Or do you think things are fine?
Don’t get me wrong, I have no desire to presume
Alien feelings upon your heart…
I just want to know whether reciprocity
Is found on your part.
Even then, what would I do with this knowing
Of things and how they are?
I mean friendship between the two of us
Has gone pretty well thus far.
So I have some semblance of a plan,
Though its quality isn’t too great…
But I suppose it was based on a word of God;
He bid me “wait”.
